In spite of myself, the vegetable garden I planted in April did grow! All I did was plan, plant and water and amazingly I’m now supplying butter lettuce to friends and neighbors. I’ve enclosed pictures as proof. This makes me wonder how many of my colleagues and clients, metaphorically speaking, are doing this for their business? Are you planning, planting and watering your business or are you stuck in the minutia of everyday doldrums? And importantly, are you taking stock?
Most of you have boards to answer to which places scheduled pressure, but it’s still easy to hide behind excuses and keep doing the same old. I know because I’ve done this. But the truth has an uncanny way of surfacing in the end, and we must take stock on a regular basis of where we are today and where we want to be in the next quarter.
I was recently in a marketing meeting with a client and I asked him what their IR firm, who they are paying $7500 / month, was doing for them. “Hmmm, I’m not really sure”, said the CEO. Other than proofing and disseminating some press releases, he really couldn’t put his finger on anything else they were doing to move the needle. I encouraged him to audit the work they did and were planning to do this quarter. That’s a lot of shareholder money going to “I’m not really sure.” I was floored. By comparison, our invoices always include a set of deliverables, a product, and a full ROI report even on projects as small as $2000!
I encourage you to ‘take stock’ of where your dollars are going. I recently cancelled my home phone. With four cell phones in the house plus an office line, we didn’t need it. It’s a $540/year savings or $2700 over 5 years. That’s two plane tickets to somewhere fun.
Take stock of where you are today and where you want to be. Strive to be more ecologically aware – you’ll be amazed at the savings and efficiencies you’ll be able to realize.
