Rob Henderson, President & CEO of BioTalent Canada explains how this company is finding jobs for Canada’s bio-economy.
Our company, I think has a pretty unique organizational design. We are right at the center connecting job seekers with biotech companies, along with federal government, who has a mandate to grow the innovation agenda for the country as well as to grow talent. We do two things really, we do a lot of research so that we can identify skills deficits that are within the biotech industry. And secondly what we do is we work with the government and industry leaders and we work with job seekers to address, identify and action on those skills gaps.
We have several initiatives going on. One deals with newcomers, we have several dealing with the youth and we have on that helps employ disabled Canadians within the biotech workforce. We are going to be injecting over 3 million dollars of capital into the biotech industry in Canada this year. And as a result of our initiatives more than 300 people will find their first job.
We have four national and ten provincial industry association partners, which gives us access to literally thousands of companies across Canada. Along with that we have several showcase employers that are amongst the faster growing employers in Canada in the biotech industry. That gives us an unprecedented bio-economy network within Canada. Canada is going to be having over 300,000 newcomers come into the country this year. Many of them are professionals with skills that are very valuable to the biotech economy. I think it is absolutely fantastic being able to get young people into jobs, newcomers, women, people with disabilities, that’s what we do here everyday.
