CEO Clips - Electra Battery Materials: Cobalt Refining Comes Home
Electra Battery Materials is preparing to launch the first cobalt refinery of its kind on the continent, backed by government support and a clear path to commissioning.
Building North America’s first battery-grade cobalt refinery
As the global demand for electric vehicles and clean energy soars, cobalt remains a key material in battery chemistry. Yet, nearly all battery-grade cobalt today is refined in China. Electra Battery Materials is working to change that. CEO Trent Mell says the company is entering the final construction phase of North America’s first battery-grade cobalt refinery, a project that’s already permitted, largely built, and fully supported by three levels of government.
Located in Ontario, the facility is being expanded and modernized to meet growing supply chain demands from automakers and battery manufacturers. With commissioning expected to begin next year, Electra is positioning itself to be a vital supplier in the reshoring of clean tech production. As Mell puts it, the next three years will be “action-packed,” and the success of this first facility will set the tone for what comes next—not only for Electra, but for the continent’s battery independence.
