EY Canada: Why Is Critical Minerals Investment Shifting to Stable Jurisdictions?

Countries are increasingly looking to secure raw material supply from stable jurisdictions that meet higher environmental and social standards, reshaping where mining investment is flowing.

Supply security has become an important consideration for governments and manufacturers around the world. EY’s Iain Thompson points to initiatives such as the European Union’s Raw Materials Initiative, which sought to strengthen access to materials from secure and reliable sources.

This focus is contributing to a shift in how countries evaluate mineral supply chains. Beyond access to resources, jurisdictional stability, environmental standards and social standards are becoming increasingly important factors in determining where supply comes from.

As governments seek more secure sources of critical raw materials, Thompson says investment is following the trend toward safe, stable mining jurisdictions, potentially changing where new supply is developed.
