CEO Clips - Scandium Canada: Why Is Scandium Emerging as a Critical Metal for Advanced Manufacturing?

The company is advancing what it describes as North America's only primary source of scandium while commercializing lightweight aluminum-scandium alloys for next-generation industries.

While metals such as lithium, copper, and rare earths often dominate discussions around critical minerals, scandium is emerging as another strategic material with the potential to improve the performance of advanced manufacturing.

Scandium is primarily used as an alloying element in aluminum. Even in small quantities, it can significantly improve aluminum's strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and weldability while maintaining its lightweight characteristics. These properties have attracted interest from industries where reducing weight can improve efficiency and performance.

Scandium Canada is working to capitalize on this opportunity through both resource development and materials innovation.

The company's flagship Crater Lake Project, located in Nunavik, Quebec, is what management describes as North America's only primary source of scandium currently under development. The project has advanced through several important technical milestones, including a preliminary economic assessment and updated mineral resource estimates.

Today, the company is focused on advancing a pre-feasibility study while conducting a new drilling campaign designed to collect representative samples for pilot-scale testing. These activities are intended to support the project's continued technical development and future commercialization.

Beyond mining, Scandium Canada has also developed two proprietary aluminum-scandium alloys that have entered the commercialization phase. By participating in both resource development and downstream material applications, the company is pursuing a vertically integrated strategy within the scandium value chain.

As governments and manufacturers continue searching for lightweight, high-performance materials that can improve efficiency across transportation, aerospace, and industrial sectors, scandium may become an increasingly important component of next-generation manufacturing.
